Smart cars as a form of public transport.
A growing number of cities is using the car-sharing system of Car2go. Any city which joins the project will get access to several hundreds of small cars. Anyone who needs transportation can use a car for a nice price. It is paid per minute and the car does not have a special place to be parked: it can be left at the place of destination.

Public Transport?
This is a form of public transport, but not for people without a drivers license. So it is not really a form of public transport. Not yet.

There are interesting possibilities: these cars are already equipped with a navigation system. There are vehicles equipped with radar and communication systems so they do not cause collisions (for example: click this link). There are vehicles that can run more or less independently: see the links on the page ‘interesting links’.

Imagine that these techniques are combined in a single vehicle. Then these vehicles can bring you to your destination by themselves. No driver needed. When there is no car available in your direct surroundings you will be able to summon a car via a special app on your smartphone or simply by pushing a button at a ‘bus’-stop.
